India's largest stock exchange is a regulated electronic marketplace in Mumbai where buyers and sellers trade shares and other securities at publicly visible prices. It runs electronic trading, clearing, settlement, listing and market data for equities, derivatives, currency derivatives, debt and other assets, and it is where the Nifty 50 index is calculated.

For first time investors asking what is NSE, the basic answer is that it is the venue where buy and sell orders are matched. It is not a broker that executes trades on behalf of clients, and it is not regulator that frames the rules.

As per NSE, it was incorporated in 1992, and it describes itself as a platform covering many types of assets.

How a broker order reaches NSE and settles

An investor cannot place an order on the exchange directly. The order is given through a broker, who is a trading member of NSE, and it reaches the electronic system of the exchange, where buy and sell orders are matched by price and time.

For an investor buying 10 shares at Rs 100 each, the total value of the trade will be Rs 1,000. After the match, clearing and settlement follow, and the shares are credited to the of the investor.

Companies list their shares on NSE and trading in its equities segment began in 1994. The exchange now also covers derivatives, currency derivatives and debt, and NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) was set up in GIFT City in 2017. NSE is a recognised stock exchange under Section 4 of the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act, 1956. regulates it under the SEBI Act, 1992 and the Securities Contracts (Regulation) (Stock Exchanges and Clearing Corporations) Regulations, 2018.

NSE's scale, index role and difference from SEBI

NSE's offer document shows 3,005 listed entities on 30 June 2026, with a combined market capitalisation of Rs 474.08 trillion. It also shows 132.37 million unique registered investors and 1,328 trading members. NSE says it ranked second globally by equity trades in the World Federation of Exchanges 2024 report.

The Nifty 50 is calculated from prices on the exchange, and many and exchange traded funds follow it.

BSE is a separate exchange that lists many of the same companies, and its benchmark index is the Sensex.

NSE is not SEBI either. NSE runs the market, while SEBI is the regulator that sets the rules NSE must follow.
