Read the full meaning of BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange), yet both exchanges will open for a special Muhurat session. Among the Indian stock market holidays of 2026, it is the one date on which a closure and an opening fall together.
Nifty Indices 2026 holiday calendar lists the date, and it shows that Muhurat trading will be conducted on that Sunday. Investors who look at the calendar will find the day marked as a holiday, with the Muhurat entry placed alongside it.
As per the circulars issued in October 2026, NSE and BSE will open only for special Muhurat windows, and the equity window has separate pre-open, continuous and closing auction phases. Many families treat the occasion as a symbolic start to the new Samvat year, so the session is being followed closely by individuals who place small, traditional orders on this day.
How the holiday calendar is set
Exchange holiday lists are published well in advance in the form of yearly calendars, and the dates of Muhurat trading are listed alongside the regular holidays. The Nifty Indices 2026 list follows this pattern, and it carries the Muhurat entry next to the Diwali holiday.
Same calendar had said that the timings of the session would be notified subsequently. Investors who looked at the list earlier therefore found the date but not the hours, and those details were added later through the exchange notices.
What the Muhurat session covers
The exchanges have set out the timetable for the equity market through NSE circular NSE/CMTR/76941 and BSE notice 20261019-9, both issued on 19 October 2026. These are the notices that added the hours which the holiday calendar had left open.
NSE and BSE have also announced Muhurat sessions for their equity derivatives segments, in addition to equities. Traders in futures and options will therefore find a window on the same Sunday.
Normal trading in the Muhurat session runs from 2:20 PM to 3:30 PM, with the pre-open session from 2:05 PM to 2:20 PM, as per the NSE circular.
