In short

  • Steel stocks were among the Nifty 50 advancers on 2 November 2026, with Reliance Industries at the top of the gainers list, up about 11.6%.
  • Brokers rank stocks by percentage change in price over the previous close, and the order keeps changing through the trading day.
  • The Nifty 50 is weighted by free-float market capitalisation, so a large company can influence the index more than a higher percentage gainer.
  • Shriram Finance and Coal India, each up around 4.9%, completed the top five gainers, while the article gives no published method for how these lists treat very small or thinly traded stocks.

Shriram Finance and Coal India were up around 4.9% each, which completed the top five names on the gainers side.

Steel and financial stocks were the ones topping the gains, and many investors glancing at the evening lists would have seen the same trend.

How the lists are ranked

A gainers list orders stocks by the percentage change in the share price against the previous day's close.

On that page, it shows the ranking gets refreshed during the trading session and is not set just once at market close. So a stock that is at the very top in the morning can be pushed down by afternoon, and only when the session ends do we know the final order.

People who open these pages in the daytime are seeing a ranking that keeps on changing.

The study did not uncover any published method for creating the gainer and loser lists, so the points above are based on how one broker's page explains the ranking.

What a percentage ranking leaves out

The does not act like a simple list of winners. Since 26 June 2009, has assigned each constituent weight based on its free‑float market capitalisation and the index is rebalanced twice a year, not reset daily.

A stock with a large weight can therefore move the index more than a stock with a bigger percentage gain. On the same Monday, RIL climbed around 12% and the Sensex gained about 1,233 points, as per Business Standard. NSE sectoral indices finished mixed, with Nifty Oil and Gas as the top sector gainer.

A list ranks the size of a move and it does not show how much a stock affected the index.

NSE has not published a methodology for the gainer and loser lists themselves, so how they treat very small or thinly traded stocks is not stated. The lists are best read as a snapshot of that session.

Frequently asked questions

How are NSE top gainers and losers decided?

Stocks are ordered by the percentage change in their share price compared with the previous day's close.

Does the gainers list change during the day?

Yes, the ranking is refreshed through the trading session, so the final order is known only when the market concludes.

Does the top gainer move the Nifty 50 the most?

Not necessarily. The index gives each company a weight based on free-float market capitalisation, so a large company with a smaller percentage rise can have a bigger effect.
